A welder on my last job taught me to check my hat light battery before every splash
I used to just grab my gear and go, but he made me test the battery on the surface every single time. Last Tuesday my light died at 40 feet in murky water near a pipeline joint, and I had to feel my way back to the cage. Anyone else got a pre dive check they swear by?
Oh man, that pipeline joint sounds like a nightmare. But I gotta say, the light itself matters just as much as the battery. A fresh battery in a cheap light still dies on you. I run a Bright X4 and the thing is sealed tight, but the O ring on the cap is what gets me every time. If that ring is dry or cracked, water sneaks in and the light floods at depth, battery or not. So my check is battery plus a quick look at the O ring and a little silicone grease before it ever hits the water. Learned that one the hard way at 60 feet, and trust me, feeling your way along a muddy bottom is no fun.
