TIL most guys on site don't realize their tape measure hook is loose for a reason

Been cutting lumber for 12 years and always thought my Stanley was defective until a framer in Phoenix showed me you're supposed to use the hook's play for inside measurements. Has anyone else gone years not knowing this or am I just the slow one?

Man I felt that. Same thing happened to me with a speed square once, thought the little ridge was a defect for years. It's wild how many tools have these clever features nobody tells you about until some random guy on a job site drops the knowledge. Makes you wonder what other simple things we're all missing just because nobody thought to explain them.
