TIL a tilt-up panel in Fort Worth was set 4 inches off and nobody caught it for 3 weeks
I was talking to a super named Ray at a job site in Fort Worth last week and he told me about a tilt-up warehouse they poured about 3 years ago. One of the 60 foot panels got set 4 inches out of line on the slab and nobody noticed it until the steel erector showed up 3 weeks later and his beams wouldn't land. Ray said they had to cut the weld plates and re-shim the whole column line, which cost them almost $9,000 in extra iron and a week of schedule. The wild part is the surveyor had shot it and signed off, so the GC ate it with no back charge. Ray told me straight up, 'we trusted the stake and never pulled a tape.' Now I walk every panel line myself with a tape before I sign anything. Anyone else had a survey bust cost them real money on a tilt-up job?
Man, that survey sign off is the scary part, makes you wonder how many other panels are out there riding on a stake nobody double checked. Good on you for pulling a tape every time now, that 9 grand and a lost week would've bought a whole lot of tape measures.
