I used to think site super punch lists were nitpicking until a 12 unit strip mall in Boise taught me otherwise
For years I rolled my eyes at supers who walked a job with a clipboard and flagged every little drywall nick and crooked outlet cover. Then I took over a strip mall remodel in Boise last spring and the punch list on my first two units ate up 30 man hours of callbacks over six weeks. So I tried the thing I used to mock. I had my foreman walk each unit with a clipboard two days before the owner's rep came through, and we knocked out 40 small items in a single afternoon. By unit six, our callbacks dropped to almost nothing and the owner's rep literally asked if we had changed crews. Turns out the punch list was never about nitpicking, it was about not paying guys twice to walk the same hallway. Has anyone else had a super change your mind on this, or am I late to the party?
My old man used to say the same thing about pressure washing the driveway before a party. I thought it was a huge waste of a Saturday until I skipped it one time and spent the whole cookout answering questions about why the concrete looked so bad. Small stuff adds up fast when other people are the ones looking at it.
