Had a chat with a structural engineer last Thursday who told me my beam sizing was overkill by 40%

He said I was wasting money on W16 beams when W12s would work fine for that span, and now I'm wondering how many other specs I've been overbuilding for the last 15 years - anyone else ever get called out by an engineer and felt like a fool?

How many of us have been there, man? I spent years over-specing joists on every deck job cause I thought I was being safe, until an inspector finally pulled out the span tables and showed me I was basically building bridges for Barbie cars. That feeling of realizing you've been wasting client money for a decade is brutal. It stings way worse than just being wrong about something, you know? At least you actually talked to an engineer instead of just guessing, that's more than most of us do.
