Wasted $220 on a signed variant that turned out fake

Picked up a signed McFarlane Spawn #1 at a convention in Chicago last September, guy had a COA and everything. Paid $220 because the signature looked right, but when I got it home and compared it to my other signed books, the ink was way too thick and the pen pressure was off. I guess my question is, has anyone else gotten burned by fake signatures at these shows, and do you bother with the expensive authentication service or just stick to buying from known dealers?

That $220 hit close to home. I used to think any COA from a table at a con was good enough, figured these guys had too much to lose by faking stuff. Then I bought a "signed" Neil Gaiman book at a show in Dallas two years ago, same deal, thick ink, shaky lines, and a COA that looked printed on a home printer. Sent it to CBCS and it came back as a verified fake, no doubt about it. That changed my whole view. Now I only buy sigs from dealers I've been going to for years, or I get stuff slabbed right at the show if the company has a booth there. Sucks you lost the cash, but honestly, the $35 or whatever for authentication on a $200 book is worth it every single time.
