Tried reading Batman comics in release order, stopped after 1989

I decided last month to go through Batman comics from the start, like all of them. I made it to the end of the 80s before I gave up. There's just too much crossover nonsense. You need three other titles to understand one story arc, and half the time the issue numbers don't line up. I wanted the full experience but I ended up spending more time looking up reading orders than actually reading. Anyone else ever attempt this and hit the same wall around that era?

My buddy tried the same thing a few years back. He got to the "Knightfall" era and just snapped. Showed up to work one day with a three ring binder full of printed reading orders and color coded tabs. His wife made him see a counselor about it. Last I heard he only reads standalone graphic novels now and refuses to touch anything with a cross title. Claims he saw things in that binder that still haunt him.

So the 80s are where it turns into homework, huh?
