The shift in how fans treat variant covers over 10 years

Back in 2013 I used to hunt down every foil or sketch variant at my local shop in Akron, Ohio, and nobody else seemed to care. Now at the same shop, I see people pre-ordering 5 copies of the same issue just to get a ratio variant, sometimes paying $80 for one book. The change happened around 2017 when online grading and subscription boxes made covers the main selling point instead of the story inside. I get that some covers are great art, but it feels like the hobby went from reading to flipping in under a decade. Has anyone else noticed collectors caring more about the cover art than the actual writing now?

Flipping killed the fun. Covers are just cardboard now.
