The price of back issues in Portland made me doubt my own collection habit
I was at a shop on Hawthorne last week, and this kid behind the counter said he'd rather read everything on a tablet than deal with long boxes. He pointed at a 1985 back issue I was holding and asked why I'd pay $18 for paper when the same story is on Marvel Unlimited. It hit different because I've never once thought about the physical space, the storage cost, or how moving with 14 boxes just adds weight to every apartment. Now I'm asking myself if I collect for the stories or just because I started in the 90s and never stopped, anyone else wrestle with that?
Used to be all about the paper, but that kid has a point. Staring at my long boxes during the last move made me rethink everything. Now I'm just trying to figure out if it's the stories I love or the habit of grabbing floppies every Wednesday.
Guess I always figured the physical book was the whole point, but that kid made me question it too. After moving my own boxes last year, I started reading stuff on my phone and honestly, it's just easier to actually get through things. Now I'm down to only grabbing books I really want to hold, and the rest is all digital for me.
