The grading critique that flipped my back issue buying habit

A local shop owner in Portland pulled me aside after I overpaid $120 for a 9.6 graded book that had visible spine stress, and he said 'you're buying the case, not the comic.' I started looking at raw copies under a jeweler's loupe for color touch and centerfold tears, and my last 5 grabs from a dollar bin beat that graded slab in condition. Has anyone else had a dealer or grader's comment change how you hunt, or am I just late to this lesson?

Switched to buying raws after getting burned on a bad slab. Never looked back.
