That time a guy at a con taught me about bag boards the hard way

I was at a small comic convention in Des Moines last fall and this dude walks up, sees my bent comic in a bag, and goes 'you need a backing board, man'. I had been using cardboard from old pizza boxes for months. Has anyone else made weird improvised supplies work for way too long?

Feel your pain, I used pieces of a cereal box for way longer than I should have.

Three months I kept a hacked up Frosted Flakes box as my mousepad, corners all bent and sugar dust smearing everywhere. My roommate finally threw it out and I got mad because I had the alignment memorized. Ever replace a piece of gear that was way past its prime?
