People keep calling Watchmen a superhero story and it drives me up a wall
I was at my local shop in Boise last Saturday and heard three different guys call Watchmen the greatest superhero comic ever made, and every single one of them missed the point. It is not a superhero book, it is a murder mystery that uses superhero tropes to tear them apart, and Moore says as much in the very first issue. The Comedian dies on page 1, and the story is about Rorschach and Nite Owl trying to figure out who did it, not about saving the world from a bad guy. The point is that these people are broken, not that they have cool powers, which is why Dr. Manhattan is the only one with real abilities and he is the most detached from humanity. Calling it a superhero story is like calling Animal Farm a book about talking pigs. If you love it as a superhero book, fine, but tell me what the actual mystery is that holds the whole thing together.
