My local shop had a 'silent auction' for a rare variant and it got weird

Last Thursday, my comic shop in Phoenix announced a silent auction for a 1:100 variant cover. The rule was you wrote your bid on a slip of paper. I put down $75. I came back Saturday to find the owner laughing, holding two identical slips. Another guy, who looked like a normal dad, also bid $75. The owner made us arm wrestle for it in the middle of the store. I lost in about 10 seconds. Has a comic shop ever made you settle something with a dumb contest instead of just flipping a coin?

Arm wrestling for a comic is wild but weirdly on brand for some shops. I saw a story online where two guys tied bidding on an old video game. The store owner made them play a best of three on a busted arcade cabinet to decide. It feels like some owners just want to create a story more than they want a clean sale. Your situation is funny but also kind of annoying when you just want a fair shot at the book. At least a coin flip is quick and leaves no room for sore losers.

What if the loser just pays more?
