My LCS guy said something about new readers that stuck with me

I was at my local shop in Cincinnati picking up my pull list when the owner mentioned that 4 out of 5 new customers walking in are asking for standalone stories, not issue #1 of a 12 part event. He said people are tired of needing a wiki to follow a story, and I realized he's right because I've been doing the same thing with Marvel and DC for a while now without thinking about it. Is anyone else noticing their shop pushing more self contained stuff, or is this just a Midwest thing?
