My entire long box of 90s X-Men comics got soaked in a basement flood last week.

The sump pump failed during that heavy rain in Chicago. I had them in what I thought was a safe spot, but water found a way. About 300 books, including a lot of the Jim Lee stuff. They're currently spread out on every flat surface in my apartment, pages warped, some colors bleeding. I'm trying to salvage what I can with blotting paper and weight, but it's a total gut punch. What's the best way to handle water damage on newsprint? Is pressing them flat enough, or are they basically toast now?

Honestly, that's the most tragic X-Men story since the 90s cartoon.

Yeah, been there with a ruined comic box after a pipe burst. First thing, get photos of the damage right now before you move anything. Call your insurance company and ask specifically about collectibles coverage, because most basic plans treat them like regular books. You might need to add a rider for the real value. Keep any water damaged items separate, don't try to dry them yourself, it can make it worse. It's a huge pain but acting fast saves a lot of heartache later.

Did you check if your home insurance covers collectible damage like this?
