I kept buying comics just to keep them sealed in plastic

For years, I collected every new #1 from the big two, bagged and boarded them immediately, and stacked them in a box. My buddy Mike came over last Tuesday, pulled out my copy of 'Amazing Spider-Man #55', and just started READING it. He pointed out a cool panel I'd never seen, and I realized I was treating them like stocks, not stories. Have you ever had a collecting habit that actually stopped you from enjoying the comics?

What's wrong with keeping them sealed? For me, the collecting is the main part of the fun, like having a complete set. The story is just one piece of that.

Had a buddy who bought every single Godzilla movie on special edition Bluray, sealed shelf for years. His apartment flooded from a busted pipe, ruined the whole collection. Never even got to see the covers he was so proud of.

My friend has a whole shelf of Blu-rays still in the plastic. Never watched a single one. It's the same thing. People get more joy from owning the idea of something than actually using it. The box becomes the whole point. Makes me wonder what we're really collecting.
