I finally stopped buying polybagged comics for the gamble
Spent $60 on a box of those mystery polybagged comics from a seller on eBay thinking I'd find hidden gems, but every single one was a common issue from the 90s worth maybe 50 cents total. The hype around 'what's inside' made me overlook the fact that most of those bags are just clearing out dollar bin stock. Anyone else fall for this trap or am I the only one who got burned?

Oh COME ON, you gotta admit there's SOMETHING fun about the mystery! I've bought those polybags before and yeah, most of them are junk but I actually pulled a decent silver age reprint once that paid for the whole box. The thrill of not knowing what you'll get is half the point, like buying a pack of trading cards or a lottery ticket. Plus, you can't blame the seller for clearing out their extras, they gotta move stock somehow and nobody is forcing you to buy. If you go in knowing you're probably getting dollar bin filler and treat it like cheap entertainment instead of an investment, it's not really a burn.

There's another side to this nobody talks about... these mystery bags are actually how a lot of new readers get started. I've seen kids at flea markets grab a polybag for a buck and flip through something they'd never pick off a shelf. It's like a blind date with a comic, you might hate it but sometimes you find a weird indie title or an obscure character that hooks you. The sellers probably don't think about that, they're just trying to dump inventory, but it does something for the hobby in a small way.
