Got caught between back issue bins and modern trades at a con in Portland

At the Rose City Comic Con last month I had maybe $60 left and had to pick between a long box of 90s X-Men single issues or the first three trades of a newer indie series everyone keeps praising. I went with the trades because the guy at the booth said they were about to go out of print and the singles felt like a gamble on condition. Turned out the indie series was a slow burn and I only really liked the first one, while a friend found a nearly complete run of Uncanny X-Force for the same price across the aisle. Not saying single issues are always better, but I keep thinking about that long box and what I could have flipped or traded later. Has anyone else had a con purchase they second-guess weeks after the fact? How do you decide between chasing key issues or trying a new creator's story?

That long box would've haunted me too, but trades are easier to share with friends.
