A kid at the comic shop in Austin changed how I talk about my collection

I was at Austin Books last Saturday, looking through the back issue bins. A boy, maybe 10, asked me if I had any Spider-Man comics. I started listing my key issues, like Amazing Fantasy 15, but he cut me off. He said, 'I don't care about that. I just like when he swings and jokes.' That simple line made me stop listing prices and start remembering stories. Has a young fan ever made you rethink what you focus on?

That kid's right about the core of it. We build these mental price guides and forget the actual reading experience. The real value is in the story, not the number on a barcode.

My nephew only cares if the Hulk smashes things well. That kid in Austin nailed it, we get lost in the value and forget the fun.

It's like how people talk about a great burger place but then only post pictures of the check. The meal gets lost. We do it with movies too, arguing about box office numbers instead of whether we had a good time watching it. That kid's onto something pure.
