Switched to a 1:15 ratio on a hunch and my morning cup went from bitter to sweet
Used the same beans and grinder but bumped my water from 1:16 to 1:15 for a 20g dose, and the bitterness that had me blaming the roast for a month disappeared, so what ratio are you all running for medium roasts?
That's not really how extraction works though. Bumping from 1:16 to 1:15 means less water touching the same amount of coffee, so you're actually pulling less out of the grounds, not more. The bitterness going away makes sense in a weird way, but it's prob more about the grind or water temp than the ratio itself. If you want to test it, keep the 1:15 but grind a click finer and see if that bitter taste comes back. Water just dilutes what's already in the cup, the flavor comes from the coffee and how you brew it.
Love how you just casually flip the whole thing upside down like we've all been doing it wrong this whole time. So let me get this straight, less water means more flavor now? Because that sounds like the same logic my uncle uses when he waters down his whiskey and swears it tastes stronger. Here's the thing though, the ratio and the grind and the temp all mess with each other, so yeah grinding finer at 1:15 might bring the bitter back, but that doesn't prove the ratio did nothing. You're changing two things at once and calling it science. I'll try the finer grind, but I'm not ready to say the 1:15 switch was just a coincidence yet.
