My barista said dark roast is just burnt beans and now I can't stop thinking about it
I was at this small place in Portland last week and the guy pulling shots saw me order a dark roast drip and said "that's just ash in a cup, it all tastes the same because the roast covers everything up." I laughed it off but then I sat down and really tasted it, and honestly he had a point, it was flat and bitter with nothing else going on. I always thought dark roast meant bold and strong, but now I'm wondering if I've just been drinking the same charred flavor for 8 years and calling it good. I still like a heavy cup in the morning though, so is there a way to get that without losing all the actual bean flavor, or do I just need to relearn what I like?
Sounds like you're way overthinking a cup of coffee here. Yeah dark roast can hide bad beans but plenty of good roasters do dark right and it still tastes like coffee, not ash. Drink what you like and stop letting some random barista mess with your head.
