Burnt my pour over 4 times before I figured out the problem...

I kept getting bitter coffee no matter what I did, thought it was the beans or my grinder. Turns out my kettle was heating way past the 205 I set it to by like 8 degrees, took me 3 weeks to check with a separate thermometer. Has anyone else had a kettle lie to them like that?

Oh man, that exact thing happened to me with my gooseneck. I was getting so frustrated and finally checked with a meat thermometer and it was way off. Now I just don't trust the built in temp and always double check.

Oh come on, you're gonna blame the kettle? I mean yeah, sure, that happens sometimes. But honestly, I've had way more luck just learning to adjust my technique than trusting thermometers. I brew with a regular stovetop kettle that has no temp gauge at all, and I just let it sit for 45 seconds after it boils. Hasn't steered me wrong yet. I feel like people overcomplicate pour over with all this precision stuff when really it's more about feel and consistency.

I had the same thing happen with my old Bonavita... the temp display said 200 but my cheap probe showed it was barely 190. Ended up just going back to a regular kettle and timing it off boil. For light roasts I wait about 30 seconds, for darker stuff I let it sit closer to a minute. 45 seconds works for most medium roasts though. Way less hassle than messing with a thermometer every morning, plus I can actually pour with my old kettle instead of fighting a gooseneck that lies to me.
