My dentist's son said one thing about my SQL and it stung for days

Sitting in the waiting room last week, his kid who's like 19 asked what I do. I said I'm learning databases. He goes "oh cool, so you're the guy who makes the spreadsheets talk to each other." And honestly that hit harder than any tutorial ever did. Because yeah, that's exactly what I've been grinding on for 6 months. 200+ queries, pulling my hair out over JOINs, and this kid summed it up like it was nothing. Made me realize I've been overcomplicating my whole approach. I was memorizing syntax instead of understanding the data flow. Has anyone else had a moment where a total newbie said something that made you rethink your entire learning path?

Stop taking a 19 year old kid so seriously. He probably thought he was being nice by even saying anything at all. Most people have zero clue what SQL even is, so him calling it "making spreadsheets talk" is actually pretty accurate for how outsiders see it. You spent 6 months grinding and that's good, but memorizing syntax is kind of what everyone does at first. The real test is if you can build something from scratch without a tutorial open, not if some teenager validates your learning method.
