I always thought learning a language like Python was pointless for a beginner, but my kid's school project proved me wrong.

My 12 year old had to make a simple quiz for a history class. He used a free online tutorial and wrote maybe 20 lines of Python code. It asked questions, kept score, everything. Took him a weekend. I was blown away that he could make something that actually *did* something so fast. I figured you needed years of school first. What's a good next step for a kid after something like that? Should he try making a little game or something else?

Cool that it worked out. But a weekend project doesn't mean it's a real skill. Kids get bored fast. A simple game is fine if he's still into it next week. Just don't go buying a bunch of coding books yet.

A weekend project can be the start of a real skill though.

A little game sounds perfect. Who knows, maybe he'll make the next big thing?
