Went to a local machine shop open house and noticed every guy had the same cheap calipers

I stopped by Thompson Tool in Scarborough last Saturday for their shop tour thing. Every single machinist there was using those $25 plastic digital calipers, not the fancy Mitutoyo ones. I asked one of the guys about it and he said they break or get coolant on them all the time so it's not worth spending big. I've been saving up for a $200 set but now I'm rethinking. Anyone else just rock the cheap ones on the floor?

That bit about buying the $15 HF ones by the dozen really makes me wonder how much time they actually save on the job... if you're spending a minute per measurement resetting a cheap caliper that drifts, the fancy ones might pay for themselves in a year from that alone. Nobody talks about the hidden cost of bad measurements on the floor.

Totally read something similar on Practical Machinist where a guy said he buys the $15 HF ones by the dozen. He's on the floor all day and they last about 2 months before getting wrecked by coolant.
