Spindle speed override glitch ate my whole shift in Dayton

Ran a job last Tuesday where the override knob on the Haas control started jumping between 90 and 110 percent on its own, and I chased it for about 4 hours before realizing the encoder cable was frayed near the Z axis chain... Replaced the cable and it ran flawless after that, but the scrap batch cost me the whole afternoon. Anybody else had a gremlin like that where the fix was way simpler than the troubleshooting?

...and of course it was the damn encoder cable, not the control board I had already convinced myself was toast. I swear these machines know when you're on a tight deadline, they can smell the panic. Four hours of my life gone, and the fix was basically "wiggle the wire and go home." I'm pretty sure the gremlin in my mill just likes watching me swear at the screen while it laughs in servo feedback. At least your cable had the decency to fail on a Tuesday, mine waited until Friday at 3:45 PM with the boss standing right behind me.

The real gremlin was the intermittent signal, it only acted up when the Z axis moved just right, so of course you're gonna blame the brain before the spine. And honestly, that Friday 3:45 thing with the boss behind you? That's when the machine earns its keep, it tests whether you can stay calm or start throwing parts. You didn't lose those four hours, you used them to rule out the expensive stuff, and that's worth something even if the fix was a dollar part. Plus, now you know the whole drive chain better than the guy who built it, so next time it'll be a ten minute check, not a half day.
