Shoutout to the old timer in Wichita who caught my 0.005 chatter before the probe did
This machinist named Dale came by my VF-2 setup 6 months ago and just stood there for 30 seconds listening to a roughing pass in 6061. He tapped my shoulder and pointed at the tool holder, then said "your pull stud is 2 thou out and your insert corner is done." I pulled the insert and the corner was smoked, and the pull stud had a burr that was throwing off my TIR. I had been chasing a finish problem for 2 days and was about to blame the material. Now I keep a cheap dial indicator on the bench and check pull studs every tool change. Anybody else got an old timer trick that beats the probe?
Feels a bit off to say the old timer beats the probe when the probe never got a chance to check that pull stud. A bad pull stud burr and a smoked insert corner are exactly the kind of stuff a spindle probe won't catch anyway, it only sees the part not the holder. Sounds less like old timer magic and more like you got lazy on your setup checks and he called you on it.
