Old timer's tip about rapids was dead wrong, cost me a shift

A retired machinist at the shop told me to run my HSS end mills at 2x the recommended rpm to save time, said he did it for thirty years. Blew through three tools in four hours on 6061 and had to redo half the parts, has anyone else had old-timers give advice that just doesn't hold up on modern machines?

Yikes, last guy who told me that also swore by running coolant-free on titanium.
