Old timer showed me a trick with a feeler gauge 8 years ago that I still use

I was setting up a Haas VF-2 at a shop in Cleveland back in 2016 when this retired guy named Jerry walked over and handed me his worn out feeler gauge. He said "stop guessing your offsets, just let the tool tell you where it sits" and showed me how to balance the work offset using the gauge as a spacer. Anyone else have a random older machinist drop wisdom on you like that and it just stuck?
