Hot take: I ran my finish passes too slow for 2 years and the surface finish got worse, not better
I was running a 4140 shaft job at 180 SFM on the finish pass because my old lead man drilled it into me that slow equals smooth, and I did that for about two years straight. Then a guy down in Wichita sent me his speeds for the same material at 320 SFM and his parts came off the lathe looking like mirrors while mine needed polishing. I bumped mine up one job at a time and watched the chips go from stringy and blue to nice silver 6s, and my insert life went up too, not down like I was scared of. So now I am stuck between two camps: the old timers who swear lower SFM saves inserts, and the newer guys who say rubbing the tool is what kills it. Where do you all land on this, do you run finish passes hot or slow?
Rubbing the tool is what kills it" is dead on, but nobody talks about the built up edge factor. Too slow and you're basically smearing material instead of cutting it, which is where the crap finish comes from in the first place.
