Chased a ghost offset for 4 hours on a Haas VF-2 last Tuesday

I was running a production part that I've made a hundred times, but suddenly every edge find check was off by 0.015. Thought the vise moved, thought the tool setter drifted, even re-zeroed the whole machine. Turns out some leftover chip was stuck under the part on the back rail, just enough to push it out of square. Four hours of my life gone because I didn't wipe down the table before loading. Anyone else ever waste a whole shift on something that dumb?

Four hours seems like a lot of paperwork and soul searching for something a quick pass with a rag would have caught. I get being thorough but checking tool setters and re-zeroing the whole machine before just wiping down the table feels like overkill. You probably could have saved 3 hours and 45 minutes just by looking for the obvious first. Then again I've spent a full shift chasing a 0.002 offset on a Bridgeport so maybe I'm not one to talk.

Yeah @kim_west that Bridgeport offset hunt sounds painfully familiar lol.
