Can we talk about the time someone thought CNC meant I work with clay?

I was at a bar after work and got talking to this guy about our jobs. When I mentioned CNC, he lit up and said his cousin does pottery on a wheel. I had to tell him it's computer controlled machining, not sculpting mud. He just stared at me for a second before asking if I ever get my hands dirty. I mean, idk, maybe it's just me but that was a whole new level of confusion.

green.grant is right about that wild mental jump. Could you imagine trying to explain G-code to someone waiting for their vase to dry? His pottery cousin probably thinks we just hit print on a really messy art project. The hands dirty question gets me too, like sure, there's grease and metal chips but it's a different kind of grime. That guy must have left thinking my shop is full of spinning tables and wet lumps of clay.

That bar conversation must have been a trip. I can just picture him imagining you coding some software to sculpt mud on a potter's wheel. The mental jump from a machine shop to a craft studio is pretty wild. His question about getting your hands dirty is perfect, like yeah, sometimes a cutting fluid spill happens. Not exactly the same as clay under the fingernails.

Ever try to explain coolant leaks to someone who only knows clay slip?
