Can we talk about the guy who fixed my crash with a single question

Old timer at a shop in Tulsa asked me if I checked my work offset before blaming the tool holder, and that one question saved me about 80 bucks on a new collet I was about to order - has anyone else had a random stranger just walk up and fix your whole problem in 10 seconds?

Yep @leelewis, I've had a guy just point at my DRO and walk off, saved me chasing a ghost for an hour.

Saved you about 80 bucks" - man, that's a win for sure. But let's be real, if you were about to drop money on a new collet without checking the work offset first, maybe the real issue is that you need to slow down a bit. It doesn't take a genius to look at the machine and think "wait, did I set my zero right?" before blaming the parts. Not trying to be harsh, but sometimes we overcomplicate stuff that's really just a basic step we skipped.

A buddy of mine did the same thing last month - swapped four tools before realizing his offset was off by a half-inch. @the_ryan nailed it, sometimes we just gotta step back before jumping to the expensive fix.
