Appreciation post: Watching coolant go from a waste stream to a closed loop

Back then we just drained and replaced the whole tank, but now we run it through filters and top it off for ages.

Remember, even filtered coolant doesn't last forever.

That's true but it misses the bigger point. Coolant breaks down from heat cycles and chemical changes, not just getting dirty. The anti-corrosion additives get used up. Old coolant turns acidic and eats away at aluminum parts like the water pump or heater core. You can filter it all day and still end up with a system full of rust and jelly. Testing it yearly is the only real way to know.
