I kept hogging right to the line and wondering why my finishes looked like gravel, and now the rough leaves a hair of stock so the finisher actually cuts instead of rubbing. Anyone else got a roughing rule of thumb they stick to?
Wait, you're only leaving ten thou? That seems like way too little to me, I usually rough leaving .030 to .050 depending on the material and how rigid the setup is. Ten thou barely gives the insert anything to bite, especially on a Haas where you might get a little tool push. Maybe it worked for your foreman because his finisher was taking a deeper cut anyway?
