Why does nobody question the carbon offsets on their energy bill?

Last month I read my utility statement from Duke Energy and noticed a $2.50 charge for 'green energy credits' that I never signed up for. When I called, the rep admitted these offsets fund tree planting in Oregon, but my home state of Ohio gets zero local benefit from them. Shouldn't we demand that offset money go toward projects in our own communities instead of distant feel-good schemes?

Used to think any green credit was better than none, but you're right. That money should help the places we actually live in, not just look good somewhere else.
