Serious question, did I waste 2 years buying bottled water before figuring out my tap was fine?
So I moved into this apartment on Oak Street about 2 years ago and just assumed the tap water tasted gross because of old pipes. I spent like $40 a month on plastic bottles for drinking and cooking. Then last week my buddy came over, filled his glass from the tap, and was like 'dude, this tastes the same as that store stuff.' I grabbed a brita pitcher after that and honestly cannot tell a difference. Has anyone else convinced themselves they needed bottled water for no real reason? Am I missing something about mineral content or whatever?

Bought a fancy filtering pitcher years ago because I swore the tap had a weird aftertaste. Turns out I just needed to run the water for a few seconds first. Still use the pitcher though, feels like I'm doing something healthy.

Oh I have to disagree a bit there. Running the tap for a few seconds helps with pipes sitting, but that weird taste is usually something else entirely. Our water here has a faint chlorine smell that no amount of running gets rid of, and the filter definitely takes that edge off. Plus I read that some of those old lead pipes still in the ground can leach stuff even after you let the water run. So I think you're right to keep using the pitcher, it's not just a placebo thing.
