Saw a guy at the hardware store argue that single-use plastic bags are fine because they get recycled

I was grabbing some soil and he was loud, telling the cashier that recycling fixes everything. Stood there and waited, then asked him what the actual recycling rate is in the US. He got quiet and I told him it's barely 5% for plastic bags, most end up in landfills or the ocean. He walked off mad but it got me thinking, how do we actually get people to stop believing in false solutions? Has anyone here had luck changing a friend's mind on this without starting a fight?

Guessed I was smarter than a plastic bag once, then it got stuck on my windshield for ten miles.
