I figured out my recycling bin was basically trash the whole time, and the truck driver is the one who tipped me off
For about 18 months I felt pretty good about myself every Tuesday night, rinsing jars and flattening boxes and wheeling my blue bin out to the curb in Sacramento. Then last month the driver stopped his truck, walked back to my bin, and pulled out a greasy pizza box I had tossed in there. He said one sentence, "Anything with food on it is trash, not recycling." I stood there on my lawn at 6:40 in the morning and just nodded like an idiot. Turns out I had been putting in pizza boxes, foil with cheese stuck to it, and those coated coffee cups the whole time, and I never once checked a single label because the lid of my bin just says "Recycle" with a little arrow circle. So for a year and a half my bin was probably half garbage, and I was patting myself on the back every week. Has anyone else had their whole routine blown up by one line from a stranger, or am I the only one who never read the actual list of what goes in?
Did the driver at least give you a pity nod before he crushed your whole recycling identity? My guess is half the neighborhood has been doing the same thing, just nobody got caught with a greasy pizza box in front of a witness. Funny how the bin says Recycle in big letters but the actual rules are hidden somewhere on a website nobody visits.
