Hot take: I watched a neighbor's sprinkler run for hours during a rainstorm in Phoenix
I walked over, knocked on his door, and just said 'Hey, your timer's broken, you're watering the sidewalk.' He fixed it that afternoon. Anyone else had to do a little awkward climate policing?

Yeah, sometimes you just have to say something. I saw a guy at the grocery store letting his car idle in the fire lane for twenty minutes, windows down, AC blasting. I told him it was illegal and a huge waste, and he actually shut it off. Most people aren't trying to be jerks, they're just on autopilot. A quick, polite heads-up usually works better than getting mad about it later.

People forget how quickly a polite comment can turn into a shouting match. You never know who's having a terrible day and will take it out on you. It's often safer to just let it go and move on.
