Used to keep a paper phone list taped to my desk, now I ask the city chat group for everything
For a long time my system was a sheet of paper with every number I might need. Plumber, vet, the guy who fixes lawn mowers, all of it. Taped to the desk since 2019. Last month the tape gave out and the whole thing slid behind the drawers where I can't reach it.
So I finally asked the city chat group about a plumber, and I had three answers in about ten minutes. One lady said the guy she uses charges $85 just to come out, which is less than the $120 the big company quoted me. I still keep some numbers written down, but now the group is where I start. I guess I trust my neighbors more than I trust a search engine.
Has anyone else switched to asking the group first for stuff like this, or am I late to the party?
How do you handle it when the group gives you two completely opposite answers about the same guy? I've seen that happen in our neighborhood chat where one person swears by someone and the next says never again, so you end up more confused than before you asked. Do you just go with whoever has the most people backing them, or do you call and trust your gut?
The part about the tape giving out made me laugh because that is exactly how these things die. Nobody plans to lose the list, it just slowly slides away back there. One thing to think about with the group: it works great until you need somebody at 6am on a Sunday and the chat is dead asleep, so keep a backup for actual emergencies. Also the group has a memory problem, the plumber everyone loved last year might get a different story this year once a few people have had a bad visit, so it pays to ask again instead of trusting an old thread.
