Appreciation post for my neighbor's leaf blower habit that fixed my lawn care routine

For 2 years I was raking every single leaf and bagging them up, thinking that was the only way to keep my lawn clean. Then my neighbor Bob told me he just blows them into a pile and mulches them with his mower, and said I was wasting 3 hours every weekend. Now I'm wondering if the old school rake-and-bag method is actually better for the grass or if Bob's shortcut is fine - what do you all do?

bettys51 hit the nail on the head with "don't let them pile up thick." That's the whole secret. I mulch mine every time I mow in the fall and it makes my grass greener than my neighbor who still bags everything. Plus you save money on lawn bags and don't have to haul all that weight to the curb. Bob's shortcut is honestly the better way to go.

Your mileage may vary but I've been mulching leaves for 5 years now and my lawn looks better than it ever did with bagging. The trick is you gotta mow over them when they're dry and not too deep, maybe 2 inches max. If you let them pile up thick they'll smother the grass for sure. Bob's shortcut is fine, just do it every couple weeks instead of waiting until they're a foot deep. I also do a light spring cleanup with a rake to get any matted spots that didn't break down over winter.
