The 1 in 8 stat from a Portland fire report that made me change how I talk to customers
Last week I was killing time between jobs and read a Portland Fire Bureau report that said 1 in 8 home chimney fires came from a flue nobody had touched in over a decade. I always knew neglect was bad but I figured most fires came from creosote buildup in folks who burn a lot, not from people who barely use their fireplace. That changes my whole pitch, because the folks who light 6 fires a year think they are safe and they are actually the ones with time to let glaze harden and crack tiles. Now I tell them the flue does not care that they run it once a month, the buildup sits there either way. Anybody here got a shorter way to explain that to a customer who swears they never burn enough to need a sweep?
