That EPA video on creosote buildup changed my whole view on annual sweeps
I used to think twice a year was overkill for most homes. Then I watched this 12 minute training video from the EPA's website last Tuesday about how creosote can harden into that glassy third stage after just one season of burning unseasoned wood. They showed a thermal image of a flue going from 400 degrees to a chimney fire in under 3 minutes. Now I'm telling every client I see in Cleveland to at least get a mid-winter check if they burn anything but kiln-dried. Anyone else seen that footage or am I late to the party?

The part about third stage creosote turning into that hard, shiny glaze is what got me too. I watched it on a slow Tuesday night and actually texted my buddy who still burns green wood every winter. Did the video mention how much faster that glaze can trap heat and cause the pipe to warp? I remember reading somewhere that once it hits that stage, even a professional sweep might not be able to scrape it all off without damaging the liner.

Agreed @oliviat17, that glaze part gave me flashbacks to helping my uncle clean out his pipe after a bad season lmao.
