PSA: I just read that a third of all home heating fires start in the chimney

I was looking up some safety stats for a talk I'm giving at our town's fire department next week, and I found this number on the National Fire Protection Association site. It really hit me. A third! That's a huge chunk. I guess in my head I always knew chimneys were a risk, but seeing that exact figure made it real. It makes me think about how many of those calls could be stopped with a simple sweep and check. I've been doing this for fifteen years, and it just drives home why our job matters so much. It's not just about cleaning soot, it's about stopping a house from burning down. Has anyone else used stats like this when talking to customers who are on the fence about a cleaning?

Ever had a customer who said their chimney was "probably fine"? I tell them about the time I pulled a whole squirrel nest out of a flue, packed with dry leaves. That thing would have gone up like a torch. Or showing them pictures of cracked tiles inside a liner that you can't see from the ground. It's not about scaring them, it's about showing the actual junk that builds up in there. Makes that stat feel real, you know?

Saw a NFPA study that said nearly half of those fires happen because of creosote buildup, which is basically just stacked up fuel waiting for a spark. Your buddy's story drives that home better than any stat though.

My buddy’s house almost burned down last year.
