Old timer told me to use a shop vac instead of a brush on heavy creosote

Dad said I was wasting time scrubbing when I should just suck it out with a 5hp Rigid vac. First job I tried it on a rental property in St. Louis cut my cleanup time in half but the noise was brutal. Anyone else find the vac method works better or is it just for certain buildup?

Man, is creosote buildup really that big of a deal that you need a whole shop vac strategy? I get that it's dirty and takes time, but a little elbow grease never killed anyone. Your dad might be right that it's faster, but I'd rather spend an extra 20 minutes scrubbing than drag a loud vacuum around a rental property. Seems like overkill for something that's just gonna come back anyway.

Dry creosote burns at 1000 degrees. That's how chimney fires start.

Idk, I kinda see it different. An extra 20 minutes scrubbing adds up when you're doing multiple units, and that loud shop vac is done in half the time. Plus, if the creosote is heavy enough, scrubbing just pushes it around, you're not really getting it out. You still gotta go back and scrub thin layers later anyway, might as well get the worst of it out fast.
