Living by the sea taught me a hard lesson about chimney maintenance.

Salt corrosion is no joke for metal flues.

Have you seen what salt air does to the chimney bricks and mortar too? It's not just the metal flue that suffers, the whole chimney can get eaten away. That salty dampness seeps into the mortar and makes it soft and crumbly over time. I've heard stories where the bricks start flaking apart because the mortar can't hold them together anymore. So while the flue is a big concern, the masonry needs just as much attention near the coast. Really, living by the sea means checking every part of that chimney regularly.

My uncle's porch swing rusted out in two years by the beach.

Salt air damage on chimneys is often overstated. Properly built chimneys with stainless steel flues and good mortar can last decades by the coast. Most problems come from poor upkeep, like not sealing cracks or clearing blockages. Why blame the ocean when bad maintenance is the real issue?
