I finally figured out why my brush kept jamming on the Mason job

Spent three hours last Thursday fighting a stuck brush in a flue on Elm Street. Turns out the previous owner had stuffed a old wire bird guard in there that was hidden behind a layer of creosote. Took me forever to fish it out with a hook tool. Anyone else ever deal with random junk hidden in a flue?

Pulled an old sock out of a flue on Pine Street last month, same kind of hidden mess.

Wait, you really found a sock in a chimney flue? I used to think chimney fires were mostly from creosote buildup and nobody really talked about random crap getting stuffed up there, but then last year I pulled out a whole bird's nest with a plastic bottle cap tangled in it and that changed my mind completely. @eric_murray26, your sock story is exactly the kind of thing that makes me wonder what else people are shoving into old flues without thinking. That's the hidden mess nobody warns you about until you're elbow deep in soot.

Oh man, that takes me back. I found an old tin can wedged up in a flue on a house off Maple Drive once, looked like someone shoved it up there to block a draft and forgot about it. Had to chip away at rust for an hour with a chisel to get it loose. You never know what people are hiding in those dark spots till you're digging through crud.
