Finally got the cricket out of that old brick flue in Council Bluffs after 4 trips
Kept jamming my 10 inch poly brush on the same shelf about 8 feet down, could not figure out why it hung up every time. Turned out a chunk of mortar had dropped and wedged itself sideways, so I had to break it loose with a 3 foot rod before the brush would pass. Anyone got a trick for spotting loose mortar before you even run the brush?
Had a buddy run into this exact thing last fall on a chimney in Bellevue. He kept getting stuck about 6 feet down and just kept forcing it, which turned out to be a bad move. That loose mortar chunk finally gave way and dropped right onto his brush head, then the whole thing wedged up so bad he had to pull the rods apart and start over. He started tapping the rod against the flue walls before brushing after that, just a light bump every few inches. You can hear the hollow sound where mortar is ready to fall, way easier than finding out the hard way.
