Finally cleared a 40 foot chimney that had a bird nest from last spring

Got a call last Tuesday from a lady in Toledo whose flue was completely blocked, turns out a starling built a nest right above the damper and it packed in solid with twigs and mud. Spent about two hours with the rotary brush and a shop vac on the cleanout door, pulling out chunks that smelled like a barn, then ran the camera down to check for cracks. Anybody else deal with nests that look small on top but turn into a fortress once you start digging?

Nests turn into fortress if you ignore em till spring.

Three nests in my backyard got ignored over winter. By March they were the size of a small car. I counted 40 plus birds flying out of one when I finally opened the shed door. Felt like I was in that Hitchcock movie.
